The Durham Welcome Centres are celebrating 5 years of servicing the newcomer community.
As the newcomer population continues to grow in the Durham Region so does the use of the Welcome Centres.
Due to the broad network of service providers affiliated with the Welcome Centres, services are being accessed directly from the Centres and across the Region.
The growing number of partners (40+) highlights how local service providers are connecting what they do with the needs of newcomers, which reflects a more inclusive and effective range of services being offered.
The Welcome Centre’s work with Private Refugee Sponsorship groups have increased as the community responds to the Syrian crisis.
Populations other than Syrian are also being sponsored. There are at least 20 active sponsorship groups in Durham. At least half have received families. More are expected in the next few months.
Tours of the Durham Welcome Centres are offered to sponsorship groups before their families arrive so that they are familiar with available services. Once their families arrive, the Welcome Centres also provide support during the settlement and integration phase.
Communities have been hosting bus tours to show newcomers the local community and make them feel welcome.
Open House celebrations will take place at the Ajax and Pickering location on November 29th. Contact Ana Fabroa for information regarding afternoon events at the Pickering Welcome Centre.
