The Traditional Economy is comprised of full-time workers who develop a career, enjoy benefits and generally stay in the same position for a lifetime.
The Gig Economy has replaced the traditional model – comprised of flexible, temporary work, employers are leaning toward the hiring of freelancers and independent contractors rather than full-time employees.
The Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives has released the results of the first comprehensive study regarding the provision of services through on-line platforms in the GTA.
Most of those providing on-demand services are educated and young. Although many were positive about their work, 55% percent view the Gig Economy as the only option to earn a living in today’s labour market – “something to do until they can find something better”.
Although the Gig Economy may offer benefits including flexibility, Economist Sheila Block indicates that the study points to a difficult and precarious labour market. In order to survive in the GTA, workers of ther Gig Economy need to obtain a large number of gigs. Learn more.
