After several attempts to find work, Emmanuel, a newcomer from the UK with a Bachelor’s in Computer Science and an MBA, attended the Job Search Workshop at the Pickering Welcome Centre (PWC) and secured a role in his professional field of Business Continuity Management.
He now works with one of the biggest investment and asset banking companies in Toronto.
Emmanuel shared: “I had submitted over 30 applications since obtaining permanent residency in Canada, all with my limited knowledge of customizing resumes to suit the job posting. Despite attending many webinars on how to do prepare a resume, none of my applications led to a face-to-face interview with a hiring manager. Then I came to the PWC where the Facilitator, Beth taught us how to target our resume by highlighting technical skills, key accomplishments and people skills that match the job posting requirements. In fact, the resume that got me this job was discussed and improved upon during the workshop with Beth’s direct input, recommendations and revisions. The level of interview preparation and practice helped me to impress the HR team during the phone interview, and gave me further confidence to deal with technical questions while meeting with the Hiring Manager. A big thank you to the JSW workshop, its facilitators and staff. I’ll forever remain grateful.”
The JSW workshop and its effect on my job search process has been an amazing revelation and it’s now obvious to me that the workshop is indispensable in helping immigrants gain systematic entry to the Canadian labor market.”
